Healing Nature (06)
One of the biggest treasure of the area is implied by its medicinal waters and springs. There are a high number of mineral springs broken open from the deep, as a consequence of post-volcanic movements. There are more than 10 mineral water springs just in the close surroundings of the town. The locals around the medicinal waters have built numerous mofettes, wood pools from past times. These were the so called “folk-soaks”. This habit has been recalled in the past 10 years, and thanks to the communal works, many new soaks have been built with joint efforts and they are gladly used by both healthy and those wishing for health.

Virgin Mary Spring - Csíksomlyó/Șumuleu Ciuc

Based on the quantity and runoff of the spring in 1853 Benkő Károly named this spring from the feet of Kis-Somlyó mountain “streaming water”. In 1883 Mr. Imets Fülöp Jákó, the past headmaster of the Roman Catholic Gymnasium of Șumuleu Ciuc wrote in “Székelyföld” magazine concerning the Na-HCO3 type mineral water the following: “The Franciscan monarchs reckoned the mineral spring coming from the Western side of Șumuleu Mountain, located on their own territory.” This is also confirmed by the chronostichon dated from 1839 found on a stone ladle: “Rég fa VaLék. DarVas VenánCz VáLtoztata KőVé, Már Vigan Lobogok, hogy kIkI VágygyaL Igyék!”(Being formerly of wood, Darvas Venáncz changed me in stone, now I am happily streaming for visitors to taste me with desire! )
The following verses decorated the double trough of the spring:
“Szomjas merits, vagy igyál, im jó és friss vagyok itt is.”(Dip and drink as you are thirsty, look I am fresh and tasty.)
And:
“A barmok s madarak szomjukat üzik el itt.” (Beasts and birds also find saturation here)
Signed by: "Bodó Benjamin Sz. – Franciscan monarch"
The spring was lately reconstructed and supplied with a roof against weather vicissitudes. This mineral spring is very popular even today among the citizens of the town and it is considered benefic against sour stomach and dyspepsia.

“ Sziklaforrás” Mineral Spring in Băile Jigodin

Băile Jigodin is situated in the Olt river’s chop which connecting the South and North Ciuc basins. The baths utilize the cold and warm springs that are breaking open through the volcanic cones of Șumuleu on the right side of Olt.
The mineral water spring and the cold and warm waters consist of iron and high carbon dioxide encompassed mineral waters. There used to be four drinkable mineral water springs around the settlement and also more than ten other open-air springs, however the ancient natural spring of “Sziklaforrás” has disappeared. Regardless, the spring developed right in its vicinity utilizes the same water. The waters from Băile Jigodin, with similar constituents, are considered effective relieves and treatments for several diseases, such as: rheumatic disorders, digestive-, cardiovascular-, kidney- and neurotic disorders.

Mofetta – Băile Jigodin

Băile Jigodin is situated in the Olt Pass between the South and North Ciuc Basins. The baths exploit the cold and terbid mineral waters erupted from the right side of the Olt river. Here in Băile Jigodin we can find the most redundant mineral water springs from Miercurea Ciuc. This is the place where two mineral water pools (indoor and outdoor), hydrotherapy tubs and mofettas are at the visitors’ disposal. The gas in the mofetta is supplied from a mineral spring. The establishment which is operated by a private entrepreneur, went through a profound renovation and today it is functioning all over the year.

Katalin spring - Szécseny

According to the locals, the Katalin Resort is basically the Katalin spring, situated near the open-air public swimming pool called “ Szeredai Strand”. The spring’s water is 22 degrees C ͦ all the year round. Consuming it is used for treating gastritis and kidney disorders. As for the strand, the two pools of the strand were (and still are) filled up with the water from the spring resolving this way the swapping of the water. As bath, it is beneficial against flu, cardiovascular and nervous system. The water of the spring today is moved a little bit further from its original spot, across from the entrance of the strand, in a nice ambient.

Harghita Băi – „Vallató” [Interrogator] Spring

here are a lot of sulphurous, gassy mineral water springs in Harghita Băi.
However, most of the renowned points of interest of the small resort got ruined, like the Apor pool formed in the bog called Omláka; the “Szemvízforrás” [Eyewater spring], a "Vallató " [ Interrogator] bath; the “Lobogó” bog bath. A lot of mineral water springs are used as drinking water today like the “Vallató” and “Lobogó” springs. The “Lobogó” spring is used as a soaking bath as well. The “Vallató” [interrogator] spring’s name comes from its cold water of 6-7 degrees C° which is a rather unique temperature for the region’s springs. Its water is recommended against mainly cardiovascular disorders. The environs of the spring have been restored a few years ago.

Harghita Băi - mofetta

Harghita Băi used to be famous because of mineral water springs, mofettas and the Cornish stone exploitation. Its mofettas, steamers and the very often present mineral water springs (of which water consists iron, magnesium, high carbonic acid) characteristic to the Carpathian Mountains’ confine, confirm the strong post volcanic activities. The beneficial effect of the dry gas that is streaming out with carbon dioxide, forming hydrogen sulfide steaming was discovered in the 19th century. Two of these mofettas are open for regular treatments.
Their chemical content is different, thus they have a beneficial effect on several medical disorders , such as: rheumatism, arthritis among others. Those suffering from articulation disorders can benefit of the gasbath-cure, which ameliorates arthritis. The sulphurous-gassy gasbath is suggested for those who suffer from high blood bressure.
